About Blessed Stanley Rother
Feast Day: July 28
Patron of: Missionaries, martyrs, farmers, indigenous peoples, Oklahoma, Guatemala, translators, catechists
Born to a humble Oklahoma farming family, Fr. Stanley Rother answered the call to serve far from home—ministering to the Tz'utujil Mayan community in Guatemala. He translated Scripture, offered pastoral care, and supported his parish amid Guatemala’s violent civil war. Despite growing threats to his life, he refused to leave, proclaiming, “The shepherd cannot run.” On July 28, 1981, he was martyred in his rectory for his unwavering witness to Christ. Beatified in 2017, Blessed Stanley is a powerful example of incarnate love, cultural humility, and fearless faith.
