About Blessed Justo Takayama Ukon
Feast Day: February 3
Patron of: Persecuted Christians, Japanese Catholics, exiles for the faith, Japanese diaspora, University of Santo Tomas Graduate School, converts, lay leaders
Blessed Justo Takayama Ukon was a 17th-century Japanese samurai and feudal lord (daimyo) who gave up everything to remain faithful to Christ. Baptized as a youth, he used his influence to support Catholic missionaries and help the faith flourish in Japan. When the government launched violent persecutions, Justo refused to renounce his beliefs—sacrificing his rank, estate, and eventually his homeland. Exiled to the Philippines with 300 other Christians, he died shortly after arriving in Manila, a martyr in spirit. Beatified in 2017, he is a powerful symbol of faithfulness across cultures, a bridge between Japan and the global Church, and a witness for those standing firm in times of hardship.
