St. Mark the Evangelist was one of the four Gospel writers and a companion of St. Peter, from whom he learned and recorded much of his Gospel. He is traditionally credited with founding the Church in Alexandria, one of the early centers of Christianity. His symbol, the lion, represents courage and the majesty of Christ.
